WELCOME TO OUR MGM SUSTAINABILITY NEWSLETTER
We’re doing a lot behind the scenes at MGM to reduce our impact on the environment and support the people that mean the most to us, including all our employees and community. Contributing to a better Macau through our arts and culture program is also an important aspect of our approach. Through this newsletter we will share our monthly sustainability highlights with you, and hope you will join us in our sustainability programs to help us Create a Better Tomorrow Today.
Celebrating 10 years of dedication to sustainability:
To mark a decade of commitment to sustainability, MGM has released a compilation of achievements over the years, including updates to our employee, community, SME, culture and environment programs throughout 2017. We welcome you to explore more by clicking here
Celebrating CNY: On March 3, MGM celebrated the start of the Chinese New Year with 200 senior members of the Women’s General Association of Macau with an exhilarating lion dance performed by MGM’s Junior Lion Dance Troupe along with singing performances. The celebration was jointly organized by five service centers operating under the Women’s General Association of Macau, including the Family Service Centre, Centro de Apoio Familiar da Zona Norte, Centro de Apoio Múltiplo à Família “Alegria em Harmonia,” Joyful Family Service Centre, and the Posto de Apoio Familiar das Ilhas, all enjoying celebrations and sharing good wishes for the year ahead.
Ongoing Typhoon Hato Relief: As part of MGM’s Typhoon Hato Relief Program, MGM donated MOP 1,200,000 to the Clinics of Macao Federation of Trade Unions to help replace damaged infrastructure for their dental services, laboratory, physical therapy room and injection room.
Greening the community: For the ninth consecutive year, MGM has supported the "Macau Green Week" campaign by rallying together its team members to participate in “How to Care for Trees” and “World Tree Planting Day” in order to protect Macau's environment.
In “How to Care for Trees”, 30 team members pruned, watered, weeded, tilled and fertilized more than 150 trees on the mountain of Hác-Sá Reservoir Country Park. It was a great time enjoying the fresh air and scenic hikes while appreciating the natural scenic beauty of Macau. We also got the special opportunity to participate in “World Tree Planting Day” at Seac Pai Van. 60 team members planted new trees along the pavement of the main road of Seac Pan Van to restore the natural environment of Macau which was damaged by Typhoon Hato last year.
Each participant was given a potted plant as a souvenir to bring home - with the event all in all promoting the importance of protecting the environment together as a community.
RG kiosk kick-off ceremony at MGM COTAI: On March 27, the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Responsible Gaming Station was officiated by Mr. Paulo Martins Chan, Director of the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau; Ms. Vong Yim Mui, President of Social Welfare Bureau; Prof. Davis Fong, Director of Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming; and Mr. Grant Bowie, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited. The "Responsible Gaming Information Station" was set up at the MGM COTAI casino, in the hope that more tourists and local residents will have access to the respective support services.
MGM Go Green Campaign: This year’s Go Green Campaign (March 28 - April 6) has come to an end and did not disappoint with a whirlwind of fun activities! Some of the highlights included:
Spotlighting climate change: On March 24, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm, MGM once again joined Earth Hour 2018 which involved dimming non-essential lighting outside the property and Tria Spa also switched off by using candle lighting in the treatment rooms. #MGMGOGREEN also trended on social media as employees shared moments of what they were doing during Earth Hour. MGM also celebrated its first anniversary of Green Monday, the weekly event to support low carbon living through our eating habits, in the employee dining room by including a special menu of plant-based burgers served up by our Green Team to mark the occasion.
MGM COTAI Green Building Tour: Green tours were organized to share with employees the sustainability highlights of MGM COTAI both front of house and back of house. Among many highlights, the tour participants gained an understanding of the green guest room elements, our recycling operations, the expansive array of biodiversity within the property, how our energy-efficient chiller plant works, as well as all the other elements from F&B to procurement that make up our sustainability efforts.
Go Green Marketplace and Barter Market for Kids Items: From March 28 – April 3, to help our employees to Live Green, Eat Green and Shop Green MGM held a Go Green Marketplace inviting two local businesses, Concept H and StuffBOX, for a special staff market including a selection of healthy food and eco-friendly products. Alongside this, we also arranged a barter market for kids items for employees to bring pre-loved items their children no longer use or wear and exchange them for something useful from someone else with the overall aim to raise awareness of the importance of rethinking waste and remembering that someone’s waste is another person’s treasure.
MGM Wins Best Business Hotel Award: On March 22, MGM MACAU was awarded the “Best Business Hotel in Macau” at the 11th Annual TTG China Travel Awards 2018. This marks the 9th consecutive year the company has received the accolade - congratulations to all our team members to help make this happen!
Supporting the 29th Macao Arts Festival (MAF): MGM will proudly be supporting the 29th Macao Arts Festival (MAF), organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, held between 27 April – 31 May. This year’s theme will be “Origin”, which symbolizes the “spring of life”, and explores a wide range of topics on the topic of the meaning of life.
